Health Insurance Options in New York
Know the routes before you compare plans.
Most New Yorkers reach health coverage through one of a handful of routes. The first step is knowing which of them you qualify for.
New York licensed agent and broker
- Employer plans
- Often the most cost-effective option when offered. Compare the premium, deductible and network, and check what happens if you leave.
- NY State of Health
- New York's official marketplace for individual and family plans, with financial help for people who qualify based on income.
- Medicare
- For people 65 and older and some people with disabilities. Choices include Original Medicare with supplemental coverage or a Medicare Advantage plan.
- Medicaid and the Essential Plan
- Income-based programs. Eligibility is set by the State, not by brokers.
- Are my doctors and hospitals in the network?
A lower premium is not a bargain if the providers you use are out of network. - What is my total yearly cost?
Add premiums, deductible, copays and the out-of-pocket maximum. - Are my medicines covered?
Check the formulary and the tier of each medicine you take. - When are the deadlines?
Missing an enrollment window can mean waiting a year unless you have a qualifying life event.
We help you understand these routes and compare what we are appointed to offer. For marketplace and public programs, enrollment happens through the State or an authorized assister, and we will point you there when that is the better answer.
Can I keep my coverage if I leave my job?
Options may include continuing the employer plan at your own cost, a marketplace plan or a spouse's plan. Timing rules apply, so ask early.
Do I need a broker to use NY State of Health?
No. It is open to everyone, and free assistance is available through the State.
We work in your best interest. At or before the time of application we will tell you whether we are acting as your broker or as the insurer's agent, and whether we receive compensation from the insurer. You can ask for details of our compensation at any time (New York Regulation 194).
